In
the last half century, the process of European integration has become a
successful model for the preservation of peace and stability in Europe,
and as such it is also a stimulus for prosperity and growth in EU member
states. Economic growth has been furthered by the expansion of the
European Union internal market, which has been achieved through several
enlargements, new member states and millions of new people and
consumers. At the end of the fifth enlargement wave on 1 January 2007,
the overall EU population amounted to 492 million people. In addition,
in the context of modern globalisation, the role of the European states
on the world stage has been strengthened by integration, enabling them
to have a stronger influence in areas of global policy such as
international security and world trade.
The integration of Croatia into the European Union represents a great
challenge and significant amount of work, as it requires numerous
adjustments in the local political, legal and economic systems, as well
as in the administration and all other areas of society. This is a
long-term process, but this transformation aimed at achieving higher
European standards in numerous fields is a necessary one, above all, for
the establishment of a stable, modern, efficient and economically
successful Croatia.
